Time is optimal to alter Manchester United's formation - the manager states.

Man Utd players ahead of a match
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was among seven first-team players to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim contends that switching Man Utd's tactical system due to media pressure would have signaled "his demise" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his customary back three formation with wing-backs and opted to deploy an orthodox four-man defense with two central midfielders.

By his own admission this ultimately transformed into a back six in the closing phase as his side dug in for a crucial result - securing only their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Although he once famously stated that even the Pope could pressure him to tweak his approach, Amorim maintains the option to utilize varied formations has consistently been part of his strategy.

However, he emphasizes he could only alter the tactics when his team were doing well enough - or else it would look as if he was bowing to external pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I realized maybe I lacked the personnel to excel in that formation, but it was the beginning of a journey," he said.

"The goal was to forge an style. Currently is a different moment. We don't have a full complement of players, and we have to be flexible, so they comprehend why we are changing.

"The change isn't because of the demands of journalists, or the supporters.

"When the press criticize changing the formation all the time, I can't change because the players will understand I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the end for the coach.

"When we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, that is the opportunity to evolve.

"We are going to become a stronger team because when all the players are back, we are not intending to play with a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

Having just two wins in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is right to state his side have been in good form.

He is, though, managing with a depleted roster, with multiple senior stars already confirmed absent for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That number will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pushing his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already insisting he needs to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Leadership Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will likely continue to be a prominent presence, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to continue providing input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he declared. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's always communicating. That's why he's the captain.

"He has flaws sometimes - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. After he finishes treatment, he heads to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a leader."

Return Timeline for Injured Personnel

Although the specific timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
