Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
