European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
